National Chocolate Chip Day!

When: Always on May 15th
National Chocolate Chip Day celebrates and enjoys sweet, tasty chocolate chips. Chocolate chips are a great invention, and certainly deserve a little recognition. After all, where would chocolate chip cookies, cakes and muffins be without the chocolate chip!? Chocolate chips are popular in cooking and baking, for a wide variety of breads, cakes, and cookies. There is an almost endless number of recipes. They are also used in decorating. Have you ever had chocolate chip pancakes? How about chocolate chips in trail mix? If you've never had these, then you're leading a sheltered life. Rare is the leftover chocolate chip. If you don't use the whole bag, you and/or your kids will likely eat them as a snack before they make it to the storage container.  There are many recipes for having a successful National Chocolate Chip Day. And, every one of them includes chocolate chips.
Origin of National Chocolate Chip Day:
Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day. This is referred to as a "National" day. However, we did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day. It seems that many of the food and candy related days have tagged on the  word "national".  We suspect in the midst of a sugar high, the creators got a little excited, and a wee bit carried away.

Lost Sock Memorial Day!

      When : Always May 9th

Lost Sock Memorial Day recognizes your drawer full of unmatched socks. Each unmatched sock represents a missing sock. We never throw away our unmatched socks. After all, it may show up someday.       On Lost Sock Memorial Day, we suggest you spend a little time (as little as possible) searching for those missing socks.  After a (very) brief search, and in good "Memorial" spirit, spend a minute reflecting upon how warm and comforting the missing socks were on your stinky toes. Then, by all means, get on with your life. Today is also a good opportunity to toss out all of your unmatched socks.
Origin of Lost Sock Memorial Day:
Despite exhaustive (tee, hee) research, we found no one who was brave enough to claim responsibility for starting this wonderful day of remembrance.

National Nurses Week!

When :
  • May 6-12: National Nurse's Week
  • May 8: National Student Nurses Day
  • May 6th: National Nurses Day
  • Wednesday of Nurse's Week: School Nurses Day
  • May 12: International Nurse's Day
What: National Nurses Week, and a number of specific Nurses Days during this week, provides recognition to nurses for their contributions and commitment to quality health care. It brings awareness to the importance of nurses in the care , comfort, and well being of all of us, and especially our children and the aging, and those in poor health.

Origin of Nurses Day:
The roots of International Nurses Day goes back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not officially made. But, this day was born and eventually gained national recognition. International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12, because this it's the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

World Penguin Day!

World Penguin Day is a great opportunity to learn about and appreciate one of the few natives of Antarctica. On this day, spend a little time learning about them.... a pictorial book or internet site is fun. You can also watch a documentary of these cute and popular, grounded birds.       These days are also a time to wear black and white---penguin colors. However, wearing a tuxedo in their honor is optional. It is also popular today to tell a penguin joke or two.     World Penguin Day coincides with the annual northward migration of penguins. This happens each year on or around April 25th. Penguins do not fly. Rather, they walk, or waddle their way to and from.
