What: National Nurses Week, and a number of specific Nurses Days during this week, provides recognition to nurses for their contributions and commitment to quality health care. It brings awareness to the importance of nurses in the care , comfort, and well being of all of us, and especially our children and the aging, and those in poor health.

Origin of Nurses Day:
The roots of International Nurses Day goes back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not officially made. But, this day was born and eventually gained national recognition. International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12, because this it's the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

Happy International Women's Day!

This is the day that we celebrate who we are!  The theme this year is "Enough Is Enough".  I found this article on the web that explains it very well -

"THE THEME of International Women's Day today is the prevention of violence against women. The UN estimates that more than two-thirds of women and girls across the world have experienced sexual or physical violence. UN executive director for women Michelle Bachelet says: "This year, we say enough is enough. Discrimination and violence against women and girls has no place in the 21st century."

So lets get out there and support each other.  Lets end the discrimination and violence against us and give our daughters a better place to be.

It's Polar Bear Day

It's my special day!!! Polar Bear Day celebrates the world's largest carnivore. A polar bear can grow up to nine feet tall(when standing) and 1400 pounds. They are a favorite at zoos around the country. Polar bears live at the North Pole region, and are native to Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia. Need some ideas on how to celebrate today? Tops on my list is visiting the local zoo to see live polar bears. Teachers like to use this day to teach about polar bears and other bears, as kids are fascinated with all kinds of bears. Also, check the nature channels on cable Tv. The networks often pick up on holidays like today, and run documentaries.

Did you Know? It is believed that all polar bears are left handed.

International World Thinking Day

Just think about it! Today is a day to ponder and contemplate.

International World Thinking Day is celebrated by Girl Scouts, Girl Guides and other girl groups. The original objective of this day was to set aside a day for girls all over the world to think of each other, and to give thanks and appreciation to "sister" Girl Scouts and Girl Guides. Over the years, it has been expanded to include the opportunity for girls (young and less young) to learn about health issues that affect girls and young women. You don't have to be a Girl Scout or a Girl Guide to participate in this day. Rather, we encourage all females, young and old, to learn a little more about health issues today. If you are in a position to provide education and training on health issues, do so today. If you can not conduct it today, then schedule it for some time in the near future.  With our busy lifestyles today there seems to be very little time for ourselves.  Women's health and wellbeing is so important everyday so make today the day to do something about it!    Cervical Cancer Paper Pine Cone Ornament
